MDCon Treasure Hunt!

By Gunner5, 3 March, 2026
MDCon Treasure Hunt Graphic

It is with great excitement that MDCon announces a Treasure Hunt! What is MDCon up to? Well, it’s giving away a Sony ‘Blurple’ MZ-R37 whose providence can be found in the first comment beneath this article.

Merely finding it is not enough! Here is how you can claim it: you must have MD gear on your person to show the staff where it is on display.

Blue Crew Graphic

What you are searching for is the Blue Crew. At the time of this writing, the only known complete collection of every Sony Blue MD portable devices. Sony introduced Blue as it’s first color choice after Silver and Black. This collection was made from a Sony internal document showing all planned devices with the “L” designation. Not everything on that list is in this collection as some never reached the market.

The collection resides in the United States. It cannot be reached off an Interstate exit. You are going to have to work harder than that. This roadside attraction is on one route to an area that has several popular US Destinations. The facility is only open in Spring and Summer and does not have hard open and close dates for the season.

Further clues will be given as comments to this article as time passes and notices on Social Media and Discord indicating that a new clue has been posted.

The 'Blurple' MZ-R37 Up For Grabs

MZ-R37

You may ask why the 'Blurple' R37 is so special. Well, the color code for it is "L" indicating Blue in Sony's product catalog. Nobody who sees it would consider it Blue. It is clearly purple!

The R37 is a special device thought to be a cost reduced version of the MZ-R55. It was positioned for global distribution as a field recorder as it takes dual AA batteries instead of Gumstick Battery.

This particular unit's providence is that it came from North Africa to me.  A friend and I joined funds and sent $400+ through eBay to order it and an N710. The shipping and handling time was indicated at 6-8 weeks. We understood the patience that was going to be needed for this purchase. Almost immediately after the order was placed, the seller sent a message thanking us for our trust.

This particular R37 has had a hasty repair on the battery door with solder that makes using batteries that aren't full spec impossible to close the door. You must use name brand batteries without any deviation in spec with it or the battery door will not close. Removing the solder is possible and an alternate proper repair of the battery door contacts is also possible.

First Series Of Clues!

MDCon is excited to announce the first clues as to the location of the Blue Crew!

The building that houses it was built in the 19th century and has been occupied by many different entities. It has ties to the Hole In The Wall Gang and has seen 4 presidents in the 20th Century visit it on their way to other notable sites in the area.

Remember, to claim the 'Blurple' MZ-R37 prize, you must be able to present some minidisc gear. That can be a device or disc.

I wish you all the best of luck as there are no set hours for this roadside attraction!
